Do you have any traditions that you do in your family when the kids are heading back to school?
Back in 2010 I took a quick snapshot of my kids before they went off to school and then it just ended up being a tradition every year since then. I take a photo in front of the front door of our house on the first day of school and last day of school and I love seeing how much they’ve grown over the year. The door works great because it has a door knocker, a little window and rectangles so it’s easy to see how much the kids have grown. The photos aren’t award worthy but I love them anyways and if I could go back in time, I would have made sure the whole door was in the first photo (I never would have thought at the time that my daughter would reach the little window, she’s close to 5’9″ now!) and started when the kids were in kindergarten…starting later is better than never though!
Here are all the first day of school photos since we started the tradition:
The kids were in Grades 3 & 6 in the first photo and now are in Grades 7 & 10. I love seeing all the differences (and the dog peeking out the window in some). Yes, my son has the same backpack in all the photos…he’s had it for at least 6 years now and it still has no holes or anything, love LL Bean! My daughter’s bag lasted 4 years which isn’t that bad either (I think it’s a Buffalo brand) but we had to throw it out this year.

Wow! That is awesome. I do a pic too of my kids…but i have 4 so i have to do them one at a time. I love the side-by-side.
pretty soon I think my son will start catching up to his sister and even pass her!
My mom did this with my sister and I, and I’m sure I’ll do it with my kid, too. Love to see them grow up!

Oh my goodness! I am SO happy I read your post – I also accidentally started a tradition of doing first day of school photos in front of our front door and even though they NEVER smile or look at the camera, ha! I still think it’s a great tradition and I LOVE how you put all of them together in a collage board – I am so stealing that idea from you!!!
